A good Roblox username is short, easy to say out loud in voice chat, and still free to claim. The rules are strict: per Roblox’s Help Center and the Roblox community wiki, a username must be 3 to 20 characters, use only letters and numbers, and contain at most one underscore that can’t sit at the very start or end. Every idea below already fits those limits, so you can paste one straight into the sign-up box or the Change Username field.
One thing to keep in mind before you fall in love with a name: your username is permanent unless you pay Robux to change it, while your display name is free to change once every seven days. That makes the username the one worth getting right.

Cool Roblox usernames
Cool names lean on sharp consonants, a little mystery, and a word that sounds fast. Pair one strong noun with one strong adjective and you’re most of the way there.

Funny Roblox usernames
Funny names work best when they paint a silly picture in two or three words. Keep them clean: Roblox’s filter is aggressive, and a name that gets moderated can be reset without warning.

Short and one-word usernames
Two-letter names were claimed in Roblox’s earliest years, and new accounts need at least three characters. Short invented words are still possible because they don’t exist in any dictionary yet. Try these, or swap a vowel to make your own.

Aesthetic and soft usernames
Aesthetic names borrow from nature, pastels, weather, and cozy objects. They look great next to a soft avatar and they’re popular in roleplay and cafe games.

Sweaty and competitive usernames

Usernames built on Roblox culture
These nod to the things every Roblox player knows: obbies, tycoons, bricks, and the classic noob. They’re fan-made, not official, and none of them impersonate staff, which Roblox’s rules forbid.

Usernames for roleplay and building fans
Roleplay towns, restaurant sims, and building games reward names that sound like a character rather than a gamer tag. Think of a name you’d expect to see on a shop sign, a ship’s crew list, or a fantasy map. These also age better: a name that sounds like a person or a place still feels right years later, while slang-heavy tags can feel dated after one summer.

A practical bonus for builders: if you plan to publish your own experience someday, a character-style username doubles as a studio name. Players will see it on the game page, so pick something you’d be happy to have printed under a front-page hit.
Matching usernames for best friends and duos
Matching names make a duo instantly recognizable on the leaderboard. Pick a pair, then add the same short suffix if the plain version is taken.

Roblox username rules at a glance
This table pulls together the limits that trip people up most often. The username rules come from Roblox’s Help Center and the community-maintained Roblox wiki; the change cost is the figure reported by players on Roblox’s developer forum in September 2026, since the Help Center no longer prints the amount.
| Rule | Username | Display name | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 3 to 20 characters | 3 to 20 characters | Roblox Help Center, Roblox wiki |
| Allowed characters | Letters, numbers, one underscore (not first or last) | Letters and numbers | Roblox wiki |
| Must be unique | Yes, across all accounts (capitals don’t count) | No, others can share it | Roblox Help Center |
| Cost to change | Paid in Robux every time (reported as 1,000 Robux) | Free | Roblox Help Center, Roblox Developer Forum |
| How often | Any time you pay | Once every 7 days | Roblox Help Center |
| Old names | Shown in settings, profile, and People search | Not tracked publicly | Roblox Help Center |
| Not allowed | Real names, phone numbers, addresses, offensive words, staff impersonation | Anything breaking Community Rules (reset to username) | Roblox Community Rules |
How to change your Roblox name
Roblox gives you two separate names, and they’re changed in the same menu. Here are the current steps from Roblox’s Help Center.
Change your username (costs Robux)
- Log in to your account.
- Open Settings. On a browser, click the gear icon in the top-right corner. In the mobile app, tap the three-dot More menu, then Settings.
- Select the Account Info tab.
- Tap the pencil icon next to your username (the Change Username button).
- Type your new username, enter your current password, and select Buy. The Robux are taken immediately.
Your old usernames stay attached to your profile and can be found by other players, so don’t use a name change to escape a past you’d rather hide. Switching back to an old name costs Robux again.
Change your display name (free)
- Go to Settings, then Account Info.
- Select the Change Display Name button (the pencil-and-paper icon).
- Enter the new display name and click Save.
- Refresh, and your display name will now appear above your username in games.
You can only do this once every seven days. A tip from Roblox’s developer forum: changing your paid username doesn’t reset the display name timer, and resetting your display name back to your username doesn’t restart the countdown either.
Tips for making your own
Lists are a starting point, but the best username is one nobody else has thought of. Here’s a simple method that works for Roblox’s tight 20-character box.
- Pick one word from each column below. Two words is the sweet spot. Three often pushes you past 20 characters.
- Say it out loud. If a friend can’t spell it after hearing it once, simplify it.
- Use alliteration. Names like PixelPeanut or FrostFern stick because the sounds repeat.
- Check availability early. Type the name into the sign-up form. Capital letters don’t count as a different name, so NovaBrick and novabrick are the same.
- Avoid number spam. One or two meaningful digits are fine. A long string of random numbers makes you look like an alt account.
- Use your one underscore wisely. It’s allowed only once and never at the edge, so save it to split two words that blur together, like Skyforge_Kid.
- Leave out personal details. Roblox blocks real first and last names, birthdays, and locations for a reason.

| Turbo, Static, Cobalt, Onyx | Runner, Pilot, Hopper, Drift | Add a vowel ending: Turbo becomes Turboa |
| Moonlit, Velvet, Honey, Mossy | Petal, Fern, Latte, Muffin | Mash two words: Velvetfern |
| Obby, Brick, Stud, Lobby | Legend, Bard, Surfer, Sage | Add one underscore: Stud_Sage |
| Clutch, Flick, Parry, Void | Tempo, Prime, Titan, Nimbus | Add a meaningful number: Parry7 |
Frequently Asked Questions
How many characters can a Roblox username have?
Between 3 and 20 characters. You can use letters, numbers, and a single underscore, but the underscore can’t be the first or last character, and spaces aren’t allowed.
How much does it cost to change a Roblox username?
Every username change costs Robux, and there’s no free first change. Roblox’s Help Center doesn’t state the amount anymore, but players on Roblox’s developer forum still report the standard charge as 1,000 Robux as of September 2026.
Can I change my display name for free?
Yes. Your display name is free to change once every seven days through Settings, then Account Info. It doesn’t need to be unique, so several players can share the same display name.
Are number-only Roblox usernames allowed?
According to the Roblox community wiki, Roblox blocked usernames made only of numbers for a while, then quietly allowed them again around July 2025. Even so, a name made of words is far easier for friends to find and remember.
Why does Roblox say my username is not appropriate?
The filter blocks offensive words, personal information such as real names or phone numbers, and anything that could pass as Roblox staff. It sometimes catches innocent words that contain a flagged string. Try splitting the words with your one underscore or swapping a synonym.
Should my username and display name match?
They don’t have to. Many players keep a simple, permanent username and use the free display name for seasonal or joke names. Others match them so friends never get confused. If you change your display name often, keep the username neutral so it still makes sense whatever display name sits above it.
Can someone else take my old username?
Your previous usernames stay linked to your account and show up in People search, and Roblox doesn’t let you hand a name over to an alt account. Treat every username change as a one-way trip unless you’re willing to pay Robux to switch back.
