ROG Ally X external GPU setup on the 2024 RC72LA starts with the correct USB4-capable port, an enclosure or dock whose exact generation is supported, and a safe power plan. A product-family name or matching connector shape alone cannot establish compatibility. Before installing drivers or connecting an enclosure, verify your Ally X model, the dock’s power delivery, and which display will receive the video signal. An external monitor connected to the GPU enclosure can behave differently from rendering back to the handheld screen, so test one configuration at a time.

Verify your exact Ally X before buying hardware

Confirm ROG Ally X (2024), model RC72LA, in Windows Settings > System > About or ASUS support/device details. It is not the 2023 ROG Ally RC71L, and it is not the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X RC73XA. The 2024 Ally X has two USB-C ports, but they are not equivalent: use the USB4-capable port, not an assumption that any USB-C connector can host a PCIe graphics enclosure. Consult the printed port diagram in the correct model’s manual before connecting.

ASUS’s Ally FAQ states that the old XG Mobile GC31/GC32/GC33 family is supported by the original Ally but not the Ally X. However, the manufacturer separately lists the 2025 XG Mobile as compatible with the ROG Ally X (2024) over USB4, with BIOS 311 or later in ASUS’s published table. The 2025 unit uses modern interface compatibility; older XG Mobile accessories cannot be made compatible by an adapter or software toggle. This distinction matters more than a generic claim that ‘Ally X does not support XG Mobile.’ Verify the current model-specific support list before buying any expensive device.

Choose one of the two supported setup routes

Route Hardware needed What to check first Important limit
USB4 eGPU enclosure Enclosure with USB4-compatible host link, desktop GPU, suitable GPU PSU/cabling Enclosure/GPU combination, driver support and host USB4 compatibility PCIe bandwidth sharing and overhead versus internal desktop slot
ASUS 2025 XG Mobile Exact ASUS 2025 model and its power/host accessories Current ASUS compatibility list plus required RC72LA BIOS Not the same as a legacy 2023 XG Mobile dock

Do not assume Thunderbolt 3 enclosures or every USB4 accessory will behave identically. USB4 tunneling, firmware implementation, cable capability, GPU drivers and Windows device negotiation can alter the outcome. A tested pairing from the enclosure maker or a repeatable independent reviewer is stronger evidence than a connector shape alone.

Step-by-step connection for a USB4 enclosure

  1. Back up important saves and create a Windows restore point. Update Windows and the Ally X’s BIOS/USB4-related firmware only through the exact RC72LA support page when warranted; avoid flashing a different Ally model.
  2. With power off, install the desktop GPU in the eGPU enclosure according to its manual. Connect all required PCIe power leads, fit the card within the enclosure’s clearance and wattage limits, and close it properly. Do not work inside a powered enclosure.
  3. Use a full-featured USB4/TB-rated cable recommended by the enclosure vendor. Connect it to the USB4 port of the Ally X, not the other USB-C port or an unknown hub; connect the enclosure’s power supply and turn it on as instructed.
  4. Boot Windows, allow detection, and open Device Manager > Display adapters. Install the driver recommended by the GPU vendor if Windows has not configured the device correctly. A desktop NVIDIA GPU paired with the Ally’s AMD integrated graphics is possible but may require careful graphics preferences rather than blind driver removal.
  5. For the cleanest test, attach the external display directly to the desktop GPU’s HDMI/DisplayPort output, not back through the handheld or a generic dock. Set Settings > System > Display, choose the correct monitor resolution/refresh rate, and assign the game via Settings > System > Display > Graphics > [game] > Options when Windows exposes both adapters.
  6. Run a repeatable game section and compare against the handheld APU using the same resolution and rendering options. Inspect utilization and frame times, not simply whether Device Manager displays the GPU name.

Some eGPU enclosures support charging over the same cable, while others do not offer adequate power delivery for an Ally X under load. Confirm the actual power-delivery specification. Avoid disconnecting during active rendering, downloads, or firmware changes.

Why external monitor results are usually the cleanest test

A game rendered on an eGPU but displayed on the Ally X’s internal panel can require transfer of completed frames back to the internal display path, consuming additional link bandwidth. An external monitor attached to the GPU can avoid some of that return traffic. The real difference depends on GPU, game, resolution, external display, enclosure controller and cable. Without a tested SKU pair and game benchmark, do not promise a specific FPS uplift or a universal percentage of desktop performance.

USB4 eGPU performance may be bottlenecked in high-FPS, low-resolution titles, where transfers and CPU overhead matter. High resolutions or graphics-heavy settings may benefit more from a strong desktop GPU, but they still consume power and money. For handheld use away from a desk, this is a stationary expansion solution, not a way to improve the integrated GPU on battery.

Troubleshoot in order of increasing risk

No GPU appears: Confirm exact port, enclosure power switch, the recommended cable, and the GPU’s auxiliary power connectors. Try without a pass-through hub and inspect Windows Device Manager > View > Show hidden devices. Check enclosure firmware instructions before any driver clean-up.

GPU appears, but games use integrated Radeon: Use Windows per-app graphics preferences and plug the external monitor directly into the GPU; restart the game after changing its graphics adapter. Some anti-cheat or launcher configurations limit adapter selection.

Black screen or intermittent disconnection: Test another known-capable cable, a direct wall outlet, cooling and enclosure firmware. Stop if connectors are unusually hot or there is electrical odor. Do not hot-unplug the PCIe module inside the enclosure.

Mixed AMD/NVIDIA driver trouble: Identify which adapter and driver actually failed using Device Manager and Event Viewer. Avoid deleting the Ally’s original AMD package or running a blanket third-party driver cleaner as a first step. Preserve a rollback plan and use official vendor installers.

Verify an eGPU enclosure and its host connection

2025 XG Mobile purchase and connection checklist

Before purchasing the 2025 unit, check the exact generation/model printed on the product listing and power adapter against ASUS’s current compatibility table, then capture your installed BIOS version. Confirm that the seller includes the required cables and power accessories, and verify the supported external-display and host-charging configuration for the particular SKU. Follow ASUS’s connection and safe-disconnection procedure; Windows detecting an attached device does not prove sustained graphics performance or adequate charging. Treat listings that omit the dock generation or actual interface as unverified compatibility, rather than guessing from the XG Mobile name.

Manufacturer-confirmed 2025 exception: ASUS explicitly lists the ROG Ally X (2024), model RC72L/RC72LA, as compatible with the 2025 XG Mobile over USB4 when the handheld is on BIOS 311 or later. Confirm the installed BIOS in System Information before purchasing; the 2025 Thunderbolt 5 connector is not the proprietary connector used by older XG Mobile products. A listing described merely as “XG Mobile compatible” without its generation is not sufficient evidence.

Pass/fail check: With a verified 2025 unit, correct cable, AC supply and updated host, Windows should enumerate the external display adapter and a monitor connected directly to it should show an image. If a generic USB4 enclosure fails to enumerate, that test says nothing definitive about the separately documented 2025 XG Mobile pairing. Keep those results in different rows of your compatibility log.

Complete ASUS GC34 software setup and verify the USB4 link

For the 2025 ROG XG Mobile GC34 only: ASUS lists the ROG Ally X (2024), RC72L/RC72LA, as USB4 compatible from BIOS 311. ASUS also documents that its 2025 GC34 integration requires Armoury Crate SE later than version 2.0.10. Check the exact installed BIOS and Armoury Crate SE version before attempting a GPU-driver reinstall. On October 14, 2026, ASUS published RC72LA BIOS 313; the BIOS 312 release notes explicitly mention added GC34 support. Download any update only for RC72LA, maintain adequate battery and AC power, and never interrupt a firmware flash.

With the GC34 and its supplied AC adapter connected in the manufacturer-specified order, open Armoury Crate SE and check whether the external GPU/device controls appear. Verify GPU enumeration in Windows Device Manager and test a monitor connected to the external GPU output. If the device is missing entirely, troubleshoot the USB4 port, cable, AC supply, BIOS and Armoury Crate SE before changing the desktop GPU driver. ASUS separately cautions against entering Hibernate (S4) while GC34 is in use; follow the manufacturer’s connection and power-state instructions rather than assuming normal hot-swap behavior.

Keep generic enclosures separate: An ASUS-confirmed GC34 pairing is not a compatibility certification for every USB4/TB enclosure. For third-party enclosures record the exact enclosure controller, firmware, GPU, PSU, cable and Windows build, and require the vendor’s documented host support before purchasing. A failure with one dock is not evidence that the GC34 is unsupported.

Choose an eGPU from verified compatibility

Buy only after validating the host port, exact dock or enclosure SKU, GPU power supply, cable and display route as a set. If the vendor cannot document the intended pairing, treat it as unverified and avoid budgeting around a promised FPS gain. An external display plugged into the eGPU is the cleanest starting point for a repeatable comparison.
