- Simple, tool-light installation for console owners
The WD_BLACK 1TB SN850P is an officially licensed PlayStation 5 storage expansion drive, a PCIe Gen4 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD rated up to 7,300 MB/s and bundled with a pre-installed heatsink sized to fit the PS5’s expansion bay. It exists to solve one specific problem: adding fast, console-ready storage to a PS5 without guesswork about cooling or compatibility.
This drive is aimed squarely at PS5 owners who want a plug-and-play capacity boost that meets Sony’s speed and thermal requirements out of the box. PC builders can use it too, but they have cheaper, faster options and are not the target buyer here.

Design & Build
The standout feature is the low-profile heatsink, which is shaped and sized to drop straight into the PS5’s expansion slot and reattach the console cover without clearance issues, something generic drives can’t always guarantee. The M.2 2280 board is well made, the heatsink is a simple black finned design, and the official licensing means it is validated for the console. On PC the fixed heatsink can be a minor annoyance if your motherboard already has its own M.2 cooling.
Performance
In the PS5 the SN850P comfortably clears Sony’s minimum performance bar, loading games quickly and delivering the smooth, near-internal experience the console demands. Its rated 7,300 MB/s reads and 6,300 MB/s writes are ample for console use, and the integrated heatsink keeps it stable during extended sessions without thermal throttling.
Because this is a Gen4 drive tuned for console compatibility rather than raw benchmark supremacy, PC users chasing peak numbers will find faster and cheaper drives elsewhere. The value here is not the headline speed but the certainty that it will fit, cool itself, and just work in a PS5, which for many buyers is worth the modest premium.
Pros & Cons
- Officially licensed and validated for PS5, removing compatibility doubt
- Pre-installed heatsink fits the expansion bay perfectly
- Fast enough to meet Sony’s requirements with room to spare
- Simple, tool-light installation for console owners
- Priced above generic Gen4 drives of the same capacity
- Fixed heatsink is less flexible for PC use
- 1TB fills quickly given modern PS5 game sizes
Alternatives to Consider
If you want more space, the Western Digital 2TB SN850 for PS5 doubles the capacity with a heatsink included. Budget-minded buyers can consider the WD 1TB SN850 with heatsink, while PC users who don’t need console licensing might prefer the faster WD_Black SN7100 1TB.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a heatsink for a PS5 SSD?
Yes, Sony requires a heatsink for expansion drives, and the SN850P includes one sized specifically for the PS5, so there is nothing extra to buy.
Is the SN850P faster than the internal PS5 drive?
It meets and slightly exceeds Sony’s minimum requirement, so game loading feels essentially identical to the console’s built-in storage.
Can I use the SN850P in a PC?
Yes, it works as a normal Gen4 NVMe drive in a PC, though the fixed heatsink may conflict with motherboards that have their own M.2 cooling.
Is 1TB enough for a PS5?
It adds meaningful space, but with many modern titles exceeding 100GB, heavy gamers may prefer stepping up to a 2TB option.
Verdict
The WD_BLACK 1TB SN850P is the low-hassle choice for expanding PS5 storage, trading a small price premium for guaranteed fit, cooling, and compatibility; PC builders can do better on price and speed, but for console owners who want it to simply work, it delivers.
