Design & Build
The 990 PRO uses a standard single-sided M.2 2280 form factor, keeping it compatible with laptops, the PS5 expansion slot, and virtually any modern motherboard. This bare version ships without a heatsink, relying on your board’s or console’s cooling, and includes a thin nickel-coated controller layer plus a copper film on the label to aid heat dissipation. Build quality is typically excellent, though heavy sustained writes will want active airflow or an aftermarket heatsink.
Performance
Within the PCIe 4.0 envelope the 990 PRO is among the fastest drives available, delivering its rated sequential speeds and, more importantly, strong random performance that translates into snappy real-world responsiveness for gaming and application loading. The 4TB model’s large capacity also means its SLC cache and endurance rating are generous, so it holds performance well during big file transfers.
The honest limitation is that this is a Gen 4 drive in a market where Gen 5 options now exist. For everyday gaming and most creative work the difference is negligible, and the 990 PRO often runs cooler and cheaper than early Gen 5 drives, but users doing extremely large sequential transfers may notice a ceiling that newer drives push past.
Pros & Cons
- Top-tier PCIe 4.0 sequential and random performance
- Large 4TB capacity ideal for game libraries and creative work
- Single-sided design compatible with laptops and the PS5
- Excellent reliability record and Samsung Magician software support
- No heatsink included, so sustained writes may need extra cooling
- Gen 4 ceiling trails newer PCIe 5.0 drives on peak throughput
- Premium pricing relative to value-focused 4TB competitors
Alternatives to Consider
If your motherboard or PS5 needs cooling built in, the Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink 4TB is the obvious sibling. Shoppers who want to save money can look at the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB, while those chasing the fastest possible speeds should consider the PCIe 5.0 Samsung 9100 PRO 4TB or the WD_Black SN8100 4TB.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Samsung 990 PRO 4TB work in a PS5?
Yes, it fits the PS5’s M.2 slot, but because this version has no heatsink you should add a compatible heatsink to meet Sony’s cooling requirements.
Is PCIe 4.0 fast enough in 2026?
For gaming and most creative tasks, yes; the real-world gap versus Gen 5 is small, and Gen 4 drives like this often run cooler and cost less.
Do I need the heatsink version?
If your motherboard already includes an M.2 heatsink you can use this bare model; for a PS5 or a board without cooling, the heatsink version is the safer choice.
How long will a 4TB 990 PRO last?
The 4TB model carries a high endurance rating and a five-year limited warranty, which is more than enough for typical gaming and creative use over many years.
Verdict
The Samsung 990 PRO 4TB remains one of the best PCIe 4.0 SSDs you can buy, blending elite Gen 4 speed, huge capacity, and proven reliability; just plan for cooling and accept that it trades bleeding-edge Gen 5 throughput for better value and lower temperatures.
